Since Dr. Edward Jenner developed a vaccine to protect us from small pox in 1796, vaccines have been used to eradicate or radically reduce the number of deaths and illness caused by some of humankind’s most dangerous diseases. Had Jenner’s vaccine been widely available, many of the more than 300 million people who died from smallpox in the 20 th century could have been saved. In the United States, smallpox is no more.
